Everyone knows that having a bubble bath, getting your nails done, munching on heaps of chocolate, and collapsing into bed after a long and exhausting day is pure bliss. But what about the delicate, less recognized but equally awesome pleasures of life? What about those moments when you think “whoa! I am a part of something so huge and powerful. Life really is beautiful!”, or when you’re alone and you find yourself grinning from ear to ear.
It seems we are always so busy that we don’t stop to appreciate a lot of life’s simple pleasures. And they are everywhere. Sadly, most of those pleasures we encounter on our life’s journey are just simply overlooked. The definition of the simple pleasures of life may vary slightly from person to person depending on factors such as gender, age, where you live and indeed your interests but in essence it is the same for everyone. I’ve been thinking about the natural delights that surround me, and here are just a few I have come across :
When the song that turns up on the radio could not be more right for whatever situation you find yourself in. Perhaps it’s Coldplay’s “Fix You” on a cold rainy afternoon, or Bruno Mars’ “Treasure” as you drive home from meeting that special someone of yours. There are a million perfect songs for a million perfect situations for a million perfect people. Part of the splendor of this happening lies in its endless combinations.
Getting someone to play around with your hair. There’s a reason that we, as kids, had those play-with-each-others’-hair sessions… it feels incredible. Relaxing and stimulating at the same time. I haven’t met a single person who did not appreciate a proper head scratching/scalp massage/hair playing session.
The feeling you get when your body temperature matches that of your surroundings. I first noticed this as a child when, upon slowly descending into a swimming pool, it felt like I had disappeared. We recognize the pleasure of ascending into an almost too-hot shower and shuddering as the body grows accustomed to the shock, but what about feeling your physical body dissolve into its surroundings? I can only compare it to the serenity I feel when I observe how the ocean meets with the blue sky.
Waking up very early in the morning only to realize that there is still more time to sleep. That feeling when something abruptly awakens you and you think it’s time to get up, then you squint over at your alarm clock and become aware that you still have 3 more hours to sleep. A warm euphoric feeling shoots through your body as you gracefully drift back into your dreams.
Finding money you forgot you had. When you randomly reach into your pocket and find an amount of cash from the last time you wore those pants. You’re not exactly rich, but you are richer than you were a second earlier. It can make you even happier when that extra money is exactly what you need.
Finally understanding something. Be joyful of that moment when suddenly something makes sense. So what if they explained it to you tens of thousands of times, and so what if they all said it’s so simple a simpleton can understand it. At first you didn’t, but now you do. The celebration of the instant “now that makes sense!” is one of life’s little pleasures.
Hugs, hugs, hugs. Hugs are a universal medicine, it is how we handshake from the heart. Being enfolded in a warm fuzzy hug is one of the greatest yet simplest joys in life. For those few moments you can close your eyes and revel in the love, comfort, and safety of those arms wrapped around you. Not to mention, hugging has been proven to have health benefits.
I believe these simple pleasures hold a common appeal, because most of them are ones we can find in each of our days. It is about recognizing the little gems of happiness that come to us each day and finding happiness in the moment. If you take the time to notice them I guarantee your life will be that much better. So, let us share the small, but real, joys that we discover and see how our happiness can grow 🙂
